Everything you truly need to get started, no more, no less.
Starting your climbing journey? Here’s a simple guide to the gear that matters most without the faff.
Start from the Ground Up
When you’re new to climbing, your kit list can look intimidating. But most of it is optional at first and if there’s one place to start, it’s with what’s on your feet.
Climbing Shoes: The One Thing Worth Caring About
If there’s one piece of gear that makes a real difference, it’s climbing shoes. They’re designed to help you grip small holds and trust your feet in ways normal trainers just can’t. As a beginner, comfort is key. Look for a neutral, flat shoe that fits snugly without hurting. Skip anything aggressively curved or marketed as “high performance” those come later. All climbing centres will have shoes you can hire for a small charge. Renting shoes for your first few sessions is a great way to figure out what you like.
Harness & Rope Gear: Only if You’re Rope Climbing
If you’re bouldering, you can safely ignore this part. But for top-rope climbing, a harness is essential. Beginner friendly harnesses are padded, comfortable, and easy to adjust. Most gyms provide them, along with belay devices and locking carabiners. Pro tip: gear doesn’t replace instruction. Always learn how to belay properly before taking responsibility for someone else’s safety.
Chalk: Small Bag, Big Confidence Boost
Chalk helps keep sweaty hands dry and improves grip simple as that. Whether it’s loose chalk, a chalk ball, or liquid chalk depends on gym rules and personal preference. A basic chalk bag worn around your waist is more than enough and makes you feel like a climber instantly.
Clothing: Stretch Beats Style Top Tips
Choose stretchy trousers or shorts and a breathable top.
Avoid stiff jeans, dangling jewellery, or anything that might interfere with your harness or rope.
Comfort and freedom of movement trump fashion, save your best outfit for the pub after!
What You Don’t Need (Yet)

Colourful shoes, chalky hands, ropes everywhere. Don’t panic! You don’t need a secret gear code or a maxed-out credit card to start climbing. In fact, while climbing looks gear-heavy at first glance, your beginner toolkit is much simpler than you might think.
And if there’s one place to start, it’s with what’s on your feet.
